Last night, the City Council approved several changes to parking fees that would go into effect the first of the year (2012). Those changes are:

To begin collecting fees in city decks 24 hours a day, seven days a week and allow drivers to use credit cards to make payments when the decks do not have personnel on duty – this will close a loophole that currently allows for free parking in city decks when the decks are not manned more than 80 hours each week;

Increase the festival/event deck flat fee from $5 to $7;

Increase the daily maximum/lost ticket fee from $5 to $8;

Reduce the “first minutes free” in city decks from 90 minutes to 60 minutes;

Increase parking tickets from $15 fine to $20;

There are NO changes regarding onstreet parking meters.

One of the most important issues we are facing is the removal of the Mortgage Interest Deduction (MID) available during tax time. The housing market is key to our economic recovery. REALTORS® are a strong advocate on the local, state and national levels for so many issues. It does not matter at all which party you are associated with. What matters is the health of the housing industry. The Mortgage Interest Deduction (MID), flood insurance, impact fees, over burdensome regulations, tax on services, private property rights… the list goes on and on.

I am asking you to please make an investment in the REALTORS® Political Action Committee. I know times are tough; however, if we do not support the issues and the officials that understand these issues, times will get tougher. You tell me how many first-time home buyers will be in your office wanting a shot at the American Dream of Homeownership if the regulators have their way and a Qualified Residential Mortgage is defined as one that has a 20% down payment. 20%!!!!!!!! An investment from you of $15, $25, $50 – whatever you can do will add to our ability to be effective, to be asked to sit at the table and have our voices heard.

BONUS! As an incentive for you to invest, there will be an RPAC fundraiser at the NCAR Convention next week called “Miss RPAC” – a womanless beauty pageant. Each region will have a contestant & Don Harris will be our participant for Region 2. I spent some time with him last night fine tuning his attire and talent. He is going to be GREAT! And he is in it to win it, but he needs your help. The final three will be based on the total amount of money raised. If you invest in RPAC this week, your investment will be added to Region 2’s totals and we can help Don be one of the three finalists. Then it will be up to him to bring it home. Even if you have already given, only the money collected for the two weeks prior to the convention and at the event itself, will count – so please help Don. He is being such a good sport about this. I cannot give too much away, but I will tell you his stage name… Donatella – use your imagination!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you in advance for your RPAC investment. To make your investment, please call Kristin Miller at NCAR at 919-573-0995, go to the NCAR website, drop off a check to your association office or pick up a pledge card from the Association office. We make it so easy for you to support your industry and private property rights. Thanks as always for your support and dedication to our profession.

Sincerely,

Recently, Prudential Laney Real Estate & Broker-In-Charge David Small earned high praises from the U.S. Secretary of Defense as a “Patriotic Employer” for their work in support of the troops in Afghanistan. Bill Moore, a local Mortgage Consultant with Cunningham & Company, was on the receiving end of many care packages and other aid that David & his fellow REALTORS® sent overseas.

Bill was involuntarily reactivated in the Army in February 2009 & sent to Afghanistan where he was attached to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne with the 431st Civil Affairs. It was here where he received care packages on a regular basis. When asked how important these where Bill says, “If you didn’t have it on your back you didn’t have it at all. These care packages were crucial for the the moral of the soldiers and for helping with basic needs. Recognition by the Secretary & the Department of Defense is very rare. David and PruLaney should be proud of their service to our troops & we’re very appreciative that they continue to send these packages to our fellow soldiers.”

Bill was with Cunningham & Company prior to being activated & he is now back with them as a loan officer after serving his country. On behalf of Bill & his comrades, he graciously expresses his many thanks to David & all of the generous REALTORS® at Prudential Laney Real Estate.
